What is Reiki Healing?

Created in the early 1900s, this Japanese technique is based on the principle that a Reiki practitioner can channel energy into a client by means of gentle touch or near-touch to activate the innate, natural healing processes of the patient’s body.

It’s based on the idea that an unseen universal life-force energy flows through us. If that energy is low, we’re more likely to get sick and feel stressed; if it’s high, we’re better able to be happy and healthy.

Reiki is a subtle energy therapy, commonly practiced by light touch either gently on the body, or slightly above it. Practitioners act as conduits who channel higher, universal energy into their clients to help balance their life force. This essential results in great feelings of relaxation, greater energy levels and improved overall health.

Theoretical physicists and metaphysicians have been studying energy fields and frequencies for years. Everything transmits and pulsates with energy. In Eastern philosophy this energy is prana, in Chinese Medicine it is called chi, in Africa it’s known as ashe, in Hawaii as ha or mana and Native Americans call it Ni or Nilchi’i.

What does Reiki mean?

The word reiki is a Japanese word for “universal life force energy.”

The Japanese Kanji alphabet defines Reiki as:

Rei: Universal, transcendental, spirit, essence or spiritual consciousness.

Ki: Vital life force energy which flows through all beings.

Reiki was originally taught according to the Japanese tradition of the sensei (teacher), who passes the knowledge to the student through attunement, an initiation ceremony that is thought to help open the student’s energy channels to facilitate the flow of healing energy. Once opened, these channels remain accessible to the practitioner for the rest of their life. Nowadays it is possible to train as a Reiki Healer and when doing a Reiki healing treatment you should always work with a professional.

Science is only just catching up to what ancient philosophies have known and practiced.

Energy healing is allowing prana, or reiki, to flow through and around our bodies to encourage a sense of wellbeing and connection to the cosmos.The practitioner uses their hands to guide them to where the life force energy needs to go to encourage healing.

The Reiki belief system and that of the practitioner is that they don’t cause the healing, nor are they the source of that healing energy; they’re a channel for the energy.

Reiki has increased in worldwide popularity to the point that a reiki practitioner can now be registered as a holistic health professional in the USA and the UK.

Reiki is now enjoying an equal status and respect to yoga and massage therapy within the wellness industry. Even psychotherapists are recommending it to their clients as evidence suggests that it calms the mind and encourages relaxation.

Medical studies show the benefits of reiki for individuals with chronic illnesses, disease such as cancer, and for the elderly. While trials have shown that reiki cannot necessarily cure a disease, it has been validated by professionals and is used to compliment Western Medicine.

What will hapen in a Reiki Healing treatment?

A reiki session usually lasts an hour or so. You can be sitting or lying down on a massage table or yoga mat with eyes closed. The practitioner takes a moment to draw down the reiki – with their right hand held up toward the sky and the left hand placed gently on or above your body, connecting you both to the source.

Throughout the session the practitioner will guide their hands over your energy field, stopping where intuitively they feel you need extra reiki. Reiki symbols can be drawn into the aura and snapping or clicking of the fingers can also be used to expel negative energy.

You may be curious about these mysterious reiki symbols. These symbols are similar in appearance to Japanese Kanji or hieroglyphs.

Some practitioners work more shamanically and enjoy using singing bowls, mantra, crystal healing and essential oils as part of the treatment too.

After a reiki session, most people report feeling incredibly calm and relaxed afterwards, saying they no longer feel worried or stressed, that they slept well that night or felt more at ease for the rest of their week.

What should I expect to feel during a Reiki Healing session?

A reiki session will be different for everyone. The best idea is to really to go in with an open heart and mind and see what arises for you. There’s nothing you need to do, other than simply relax and be guided by your Reiki healer.

Many people do feel the effects of reiki right away, others may feel the impacts after their session. Common feelings include tingling, warmth, and deep relaxation. You may even fall asleep because you become so relaxed and wake up from your session with a new sense of awareness, clarity, and/or connection. Some clients say they feel as though a hand is touching a part of their body, when, in fact, it is above the body in the energetic field.

This practice will also continue to shift and change and feel slightly different every time, similar to a meditation. Trust that your experience is exactly what it needs to be on that day.

Does Reiki Healing require hands-on touching?

Reiki is typically all hands-off; however, it will depend on the practitioner. If touch is used, it will be incredibly light and you will most likely be told or asked by the healer before hand. Reiki treatments are done fully clothed and sometimes with a blanket or sarong so you feel warm, safe and relaxed. Each practitioner is different, and some may touch other areas of the body, like the knees, shoulders, or arms.

Do I need a goal or issue to do a Reiki Healing?

Not at all. Many people cometo reiki because they are feeling things like pain, overwhelm, depletion, or anxiousness. However, reiki can support us in so many other aspects of life. There is a whole world that can be explored during the session and having no expectations, goals, or specific ailments or issues is absolutely fine. If there is something specific you want to address in a session, it’s important to let your practitioner know so they can make sure to connect to it during the healing.

So when should I give Reiki a try?

Anytime you can! Reiki has a long healing tradition in medicine, particularly in the nursing world and it is really safe and gentle. Even if you’re not in any particular pain and just want to try it out, there’s actually a lot of anecdotal evidence that it can help your psychological wellbeing no matter if you have a particular ailment or not. Studies have found that people who come to just find out what Reiki is tend to report that they’re able to sleep better and feel calmer after just one session.

What Happens After a Reiki Healing Session?

Once the session is over, your practitioner will slowly bring you out of the deep relaxed state. You’ll slowly move and awaken the body, just as you do coming out of a yoga class.

How you feel afterwards is very personal and unique to you. Many people report feeling light, blissful, peaceful, and calm. You may feel like there is a sense of light all around you. The practitioner may discuss with you anything they came across such as energy blockages they felt or parts of you that may need more attention. Of course, if you do not wish to discuss your experience, then it is not necessary.

Is there scientific evidence that Reiki has benefits?

There is little scientific evidence that explains exactly how Reiki works, but studies have found that Reiki can have measurable benefits when it comes to lowering blood pressure, improving sleep, lessening anxiety, and reducing pain. Some of those studies have been done in specific groups, like people recovering from surgery, and others have been done in healthy individuals.

Are There Any Risks?

There are no dangers in undergoing Reiki. Reiki can do no harm and has no side effects.

The only time Reiki practice can be dangerous is if the practitioner isn’t well trained. So always make sure you find a qualified professional Reiki practitioner.

What are the health benefits of Reiki?

Reiki is linked to a range of physical and emotional health benefits, including better sleep, improved mood, and pain relief in published studies. Research suggests Reiki helps the body return to a state of relaxation, which allows it to potentially better heal from damage brought on by stress, injury, or disease. There’s evidence that Reiki, used as a complementary therapy with conventional or mainstream medical care, can help people recover after surgery and manage symptoms of cancer and AIDS.

Promotes Relaxation

The most well-documented benefits of reiki revolve around the relaxation response, which practitioners say invokes the body’s natural healing process. Yale School of Medicine studied 37 patients after having a heart attack. The patients were randomized into three groups: patients who simply rested, those who received a single session of reiki treatment and those who listened to relaxing music. Patients who received reiki found greater improvements in heart health, emotional state and the nervous system.

Boosts Mood and Sleep

Researchers at Harvard Medical School followed 99 patients at multiple sites to determine the effects of a single reiki session. The study found significant improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as pain and nausea. Additional research suggests reiki helps with depression and insomnia. A study that looked at 40 women who suffered from depression and anxiety found that those who received a reiki treatment twice a week for 10 weeks saw significant improvements in both their depression symptoms and sleep quality.

Eases Physical Pain and Improves Quality of Life

A range of studies have shown that reiki can support pain alleviation after common surgeries such as knee surgery, improve range of motion in injured shoulders, support post-cesarean section recovery, and increase quality of life for patients with rheumatoid arthritis or undergoing various cancer treatments. Patients who received an hour-long treatment once a week for four weeks showed significantly more improvements in general, physical, environmental and social dimensions of quality of life.

Lower pain

Research suggests that Reiki may lower anxiety, stress, and pain in people undergoing surgery. In a study published in 2017 of patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, patients that had three or four 30-minute Reiki treatments throughout their hospital stay saw significant reductions in pain, blood pressure, breathing rate, and anxiety pre- and post-surgery and greater reductions than those who didnt.

Improve sleep

Reiki may also improve mood and sleep. A past study found that college students who received six 30-minute Reiki sessions reported greater improvements in stress, mood, and sleep, especially those with higher anxiety and depression.

Support recovery

Other research suggests that Reiki and other forms of energy therapy may help patients with cancer improve pain control and anxiety levels. A main benefit of Reiki- which leads to a lot of other benefits- is stress reduction. Our bodies cannot heal when they’re in a stressed state all the time. Reiki gives your body a break from the stresses of daily life, helping you return to a state of relaxation. Once in this state, your body is better able to heal any damage brought on by stress, injury, or disease. By helping a person experience deep relaxation, Reiki enhances and accelerates our own natural healing process, because the body can stop being stressed and focus on healing itself.

Shift to parasympathetic nervous system

Research shows that a single Reiki session may help your autonomic nervous system move from a sympathetic-dominant, or “fight-or-flight” state, to a parasympathetic-dominant, or “rest-and-digest” state. The parasympathetic state is the state we are meant to live in most of the time. Reiki helps to support one’s autonomic nervous system toward that state of safety, rest, recovery, and ease. In a past study, 21 healthcare professionals with burnout received a 30-minute Reiki session. Researchers found that Reiki helped the stressed nervous system relax.
