For many of us, we communicated with those we love through a screen. Our work shifted to remote work online and zoom meetings became the norm. We attended weddings through Facebook lives and we worked out in our living room through any number of live stream fitness and yoga classes. We ordered our groceries and ready-made meals online that turned up at our doorstep. Appointments, meetings, events even festivals, moved to this new digital world that we all had access to.
Pretty cool, hey?
There’s no doubt there have been enormous benefits to this shift. However, there are also many downfalls. As humans, we are not designed to live plugged into a screen.
For so many of us, we have been confined to a condensed version of our physical space:
Perhaps your world became the entirety of your home.
Maybe you could roam a 5km radius.
Or if you were lucky, you could roam further afield yet still had limitations on crossing borders.
As our physical world became smaller, the internet offered us an illusion of space. We had the ability to connect with people across the other side of the globe. We could watch events play out in real time. We could dive into any number of virtual experiences that opened our eyes to another world.
However, there’s one problem.
It’s simply not real. It’s a diluted version of real life.
Having a cuppa with your bestie over zoom isn’t the same as a catch up in person where you can laugh, hug and chat for hours (without those annoying freezes or delays!) Watching a Planet Earth documentary isn’t the same as experiencing the world yourself. Even doing a yoga class at home isn’t quite like being in a studio with the shared energy and magic that yoga emanates.
In essence, our world has become dull and we have become drained.
Being online sucks our energy. You’ve likely experienced this, especially if shifting to online work or online study or homeschooling has been your reality. Screen time drains us physically, mentally and emotionally. What we think of as ‘downtime’ (scrolling instagram, zoning out with netflix) does not revive us, it depletes us further.
Have you ever had an event on and felt too exhausted to go, but you’ve gone along anyways and immediately felt revived and enlivened once you were around other people?
As humans we thrive on in person connection. We are social creatures. For most of us, being out in the world and part of a community fills our cup. Being in a workplace, in a spin class, in a cafe- we gain energy simply by being out in the world and being around other humans.
We were not designed to live sedentary lives and exist in a digital space. And this is one of the reasons why all over the world, so many people are struggling right now with depression and anxiety or feel completely fatigued, exhausted, uninspired and passionless.
Now, more than ever, we need to take a courageous leap back into the real world.
We need to take deep breaths and fill our lungs with fresh air.
We need to dive into salty oceans and feel the warmth of the sun on our skin.
We need to laugh those deep tummy-clutching laughs that leave tears in our eyes.
We need to step out of our comfort zones and remember what it feels like to try something new for the first time.
We need to reconnect with the natural cycles of life by watching the sun come up over the horizon and then fall again come dusk.
We need to look into other people’s eyes and feel seen.
We need to delight in the taste of different flavours and share meals with other people.
We need to let our bodies move with pure joy and remember how it feels to be alive.
We need to remember that the world is large and wonderful and filled with people and experiences that are simply waiting for us to embrace them.
This is an exciting time. A fresh start. A new opportunity. An invitation to live, fully. A chance to reawaken.
Are you ready?
